Butchering Thrift Store Suit Pants

So, I was in the D.I. (or Deseret Industries.....also known as one of the mother thrift stores in Utah) and chuckling to myself about all of the precious cloth and time that went into making so much horrible clothing. I mean, seriously, it's not just that all this crap was out of style, it's that it should have never been manufactured at any time in the history of this world. Oh, the jungles of large floral print rayon jumpers! The profusions of heavily pleated pants! It was amusing and dismal all at the same time. Then it came to me. "Why can't I go green and recycle these poor excuses for adornments? " I figured, I could cut up some of these unflattering, old and tired garments and give them new life! Thus, I bought a pair of dark gray suit pants and a pair of pinstripe suit pants and made this corset set, complete with a nifty little 3-pocket purse. I like them...

  1. You are always so clever. MO Zone thrift stores don't always have that great of fabric in them though. Remember we are the ones dropping off our crap there so there isn't much to choose from. hee hee

  2. Gorgeous!
Also- that corset jacket you just put up on Ebay is GORGEOUS! My friend Kathy just had her birthday and for presents she was requesting donations to her Damsel In This Dress corset.. I'm going to be poking her repeatedly to consider that one just so I can.. borrow it >.>

I hope your Ren Faire season is going well, Michelle!

  3. Hm, I never thought to look for material from thrift stores! Novel concept as you can get an article of clothing for around $1-5; but heaven forbid if you ever need more of the same material. ;)

And OMG that corset on Ebay, is that the one you were telling me about (it certainly seems to fit the bill of things I wanted!!)? :D

  4. Oh, I was just looking at your website (I'm here via the Corsetry LJ), and thinking Pinstripe and Black would make a fabulous Steampunk corsair set.

    And there it is!

Any chance you might consider making some sets in alternative fabrics to the choices you have currently?

  5. A friend of mine pointed me to the corset/frock coats you design and she heard the 'thud' of my jaw through the computer screen. As a previous person said, I am definitely saving/accepting gift donations for a future purchase!

  6. Hmm... I think the green idea is neat and that the new set you did is adorable. I'd just be afraid of some of the fabric quality at the thrift store, I guess it'd take a lot of fabric feeling and tag reading. As far as the corset coats? I l-l-love mine it's stunning and it makes you feel like royalty.

  7. I've been buying "fabric" from thrift stores for years, and buttons, and lace.

I'm lucky that I'm surrounded by a multitude of them and that their prices are soooo cheap.

i just picked up an Ann Taylor full lentgh skirt in plum taffeta with roses embroidered on in in black beads. Brand new - tags still on it - $3. I was thinking of using the front of the skirt for a renaissance skirt panel so I could use the back of the skirt for a front panel in a bodice. The problem is it would have to be an overlay - because the fabric alone is not up to the task...

I love everything you do - I'll be looking you up at the next ren-fair in my area...
